Globalizing Engineering Education?: A Retrospective on the Newport Declaration

Released in 2008 in the wake of an NSF-sponsored summit meeting, The Newport Declaration To Globalize U.S. Engineering Education was initially endorsed by 19 signatories and later attracted nearly 50 more signatures of support. The document built a strong case for enhancing the ability of all engineering students to span national and cultural boundaries, in turn calling on educators, administrators, and policymakers to “integrate global education into the engineering curriculum to impact all students.” Since the release of the Newport Declaration, the number of engineering students participating in study, work, and research experiences abroad has continued to inch upward. Yet this movement has also bypassed many schools and waned at others, particularly in the midst of leadership changes and evolving strategic priorities, not to mention significant shifts in the wider geopolitical landscape. This session brings together a distinguished group of panelists to discuss the history, current state, and future of global engineering education. It includes signatories of the Newport Declaration, as well as administrators and leaders from diverse schools and programs. This interactive session will also give participants opportunities to reflect on and share their own successes and challenges.

DISTINGUISHED LECTURE: Cultural Competency in Mentoring: Strategies for Connecting Across Difference

There is near universal consensus that paying attention to Diversity and Inclusion is beneficial for student, staff and faculty engagement and organizational success. Often, organizations employ mentoring programs to effect inclusion, or to help promote diversity within the organization. Rarely, however, do participants in these mentoring initiatives understand how much difference in culture, background and perspective can impact the mentoring relationship or how to leverage those differences to maximize the effectiveness of mentoring. This session will introduce a model of cultural competency, create deeper understanding of the pillars of culture, and offer concrete strategies on how to leverage differences to create understanding, trust and results in mentoring.

Introduction to the Intl.Soc.Eng.Ed (IGIP) Curriculum in Eng. Pedagogy

The International Society for Engineering Education, IGIP, offers an international professional development program for engineering and engineering technology educators, which upon successful completion leads to the designation of the Ing.Paed.IGIP title and corresponding professional registration.
The workshop presents an introduction to the IGIP Prototype Curriculum in Engineering Pedagogy as well as experiences in its application from different countries. Regional and national particularities as well as quality assurance in scientific engineering education and educational scenarios of further education in engineering pedagogy will be discussed.
